Call for Submissions – Modern Times Stage Company Youth Theatre Unit

War Child Canada and Modern Times Stage Company
are pleased to have had a number of opportunities to support each
other’s projects and initiatives. This summer, War Child Canada is
pleased to be working with both Modern Times and CultureLink to bring Summer Youth Theatre Unit 2006 to life.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Modern Times Stage Company is seeking submissions for its Summer Youth Theatre Unit 2006.
Six applicants (2 directing, 4 acting) will be chosen to participate in
a two-week long program facilitated by company members and other
theatre professionals. The program will use theatre to encourage a
diverse group of young people to become more socially engaged in their
communities.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Participants will
take part in professionally-led workshops including scene study with
Artistic Director, Soheil Parsa. Running in tandem with Modern Times’
SummerWorks show Interrogation (see description below), the students of
the Youth Theatre Unit 2006 will be given the opportunity to watch
rehearsals and be part of the uniquely organic creative and
administrative process developed at Modern Times over the last 20
years. In addition, facilitated by War Child Canada and CultureLink,
students will engage in dialogue about youth in conflict situations,
and young Canadians from their communities who lived through it. This
program is a wonderful opportunity for young people who are interested
in theatre and important issues facing society.

REQUIREMENTS
Participants must:

  • Be 18-25 years of age
  • Display a demonstrated interest in the theatre (writing, directing, acting or design)
  • Have a desire to become (or become more) socially engaged.

The makeup of the Youth Theatre Unit will be representative of the cultural diversity of the GTA.

DATES
July 17 – August 5, 2006

COST
Free

ABOUT INTERROGATION
Interrogation
takes the form two interviews, set in post-revolution Algeria, 1962.
Despite its historical context, this intimate script provides a
sobering look at the reality of contemporary conflict. Naeem and Safiya
are revolutionaries that have given their youth and passion to the
cause of war. Now that independence is won and the glory is faded, they
are unable to stop their acts of violence. For this they face
interrogation.
