To all educators, arts practitioners, scholars, therapists and artists,

On behalf of the organising committee, I am leased to announce the very
exciting and innovative 2008 International Symposium: Re-imagining Special
Education through Arts Therapy and Arts Education to be held in Melbourne
Australia, 26-29 July 2008.

Traditionally special education has provided a modified mainstream experience
for students with special needs. Recent research and exemplars of good practice
illustrate the importance of a paradigm shift in the delivery of special
education. There is a growing national and international awareness of the need
to develop new strategies. Special education through the Arts delivers a sensory
approach to learning assisting students to move from the non-verbal to the
verbal, from being an observer to a participant and to fully awaken student
potential. These changes have been realized through the power of the Arts
intertwined with Arts Therapy.

This Symposium will provide learning opportunities for participants to explore
and discover the processes and programming required to re-imagine special
education.

The Call for Contributions is now open. It would be appreciated if you would
forward this email to relevant persons within your organisation, and also
forward it throughout your professional networks. If you have a newsletter,
publication or noticeboard it would be appreciated if you could include the
notice above. The Call for Contributions Application Form and ads promoting the
Call for Contributions can be directly downloaded from
http://symposium.portphillip.vic.edu.au/Call_for_Papers/

Thank you for your assistance at this time,

Regards,

Susan Cooper

Art therapy workshop for professionals (BC, Canada)

February 12, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Healing the Healers
Experiential Art Therapy Workshop for Professionals

Healing the Healers
Experiential Art Therapy Workshop for Professionals
will be offered twice this spring:

1) February 24 & 25, 2007
2) March 31 & April 1, 2007

To understand oneself through the expressive arts is to go beyond the limitations of language and social construct, and to engage in a landscape of the unconscious, to participate in the re-creation of self.

This experiential workshop offers an opportunity for healthcare professionals to explore therapeutic issues of stress, “vicarious trauma” and self-care.

Participants will have an opportunity to use the creative process for personal exploration, growth, and insight in a safe, confidential environment. The focus will be on personal development through spontaneous art-making and symbolism. No art experience is necessary.

Further details can be found here…

Group Analytic Art Therapy

By Gerry McNeilly

Jessica Kingsley Publishers

240 pages
GBP £18.99. US$24.95

Gerry McNeilly’s “Group Analytic Art Therapy” fills a gap in group art therapy literature on both sides of the Atlantic.

It highlights the deficiencies in group art therapy literature, and the sparseness of research in art therapy, in the United Kingdom.

The book reinforces the need for art therapy theoreticians and professionals to continue researching aspects of their profession and writing about their efforts.

It encourages them to reflect on their practice and to share those reflections with the wider community of professionals working in therapeutic enterprises.

McNeilly observes: “There is only one art therapy journal in the U.K., ‘Inscape,’ and this has published little on group art therapy … I’m aware of only two books that address groups specifically from a psychotherapy perspective: ‘Group Interactive Therapy’ (Waller 1993) and ‘Art Psychotherapy Groups’ (Skaife and Huet 1998), which covers a wide range of clinical settings from a number of British art therapists.”  Continued….

Grant for charity’s art therapy
24 March 2006

WEB EDITORIAL – webdesk@herts24.co.uk

THE Fenland Project of Peterborough and Fenland MIND, the charity for people suffering from mental illness, has just received a grant of £4,400 from Lloyds TSB for its MindArt and Therapy Project.

The money will be used to provide weekly complementary therapy and art sessions for service users all on one day. The benefits of these activities could make all the difference to assist in recovery. Sandra Cutts, manager of the Fenland Project, said: “I’m so pleased that our clients will be given the opportunity to have a creative outlet in order to release stresses and provide a framework for positivity.

Complementary therapies are designed to bring a sense of wellbeing and relaxation and any social interaction helps to gain confidence’. Roger Symonds, project organiser, said: ‘We will be looking to recruit someone to oversee the delivery of the project on Fridays. They will oversee the tutors and support the people taking part. Anyone interested in volunteering with us, or taking part in the classes or even being part of our team should call the office on 01354 658058.’ The sessions, to be held initially in March and led by artists and therapists, are due to start sometime after April.
